What Plants to Start in March by Zone

A few days ago we let you know what plants you needed to start as of February, today we will let you know what plants you need to start in March.  I am trying to make these lists simple and just post the plants and there time zones. Over the next few weeks, make sure to look for spotlight posts on certain vegetables that are harder to grow. We will provide some tips that are eco-friendly to boost your yields.

What Plants To Start in march

Vegetables marked with a * are direct sow outside

Vegetables marked with a ^ can be direct sow once threat of Frost has passed

Cold Season Vegetables

  • Beets*:  Zones 3-6
  • Broccoli:  Zones 4-7
  • Brussels sprouts: Zones 4, 5, 7
  • Cabbage:  Zones 4, 5, 7
  • Carrots*: Zones 3,4,5,7
  • Cauliflower: Zones 4, 5, 7
  • Lettuce^: Zones 7
  • Onions^: Zones 4-6
  • Radishes*: Zones 3-7
  • Spinach*: Zones 3-5

Warm Season Vegetables

  • Beans: Zones 8, 9
  • Corn*: Zones 8, 9
  • Cucumbers: Zones 8, 9, 11
  • Eggplant: Zones 11
  • Melons^: Zones 8, 9
  • Peppers: Zones 11
  • Summer Squash: Zones 8, 9, 11
  • Tomatoes: Zones 8, 9, 11

I have the opposite of a green thumb and generally stay away from plants for fear of killing them but this year my 7 year old really wants to plant some veggies, she got me to but her a tomato plant that she has kept alive (with no help from me) so I need all the help I can get if we are to succeed in planting something that lasts more than a couple of weeks. Thanks so much for the helpful list!
